Day 1: Travel Day
On May 13, 2019 a group of 16 students and faculty member, Donna Albano, began the journey to Barcelona, Spain. At 1pm, 10 students departed the Stockton Galloway campus to make their way to the Cheesequake rest stop where they would meet a few more students. The excitement of the group was clear even through the traffic to JFK. 10 students came from the Galloway campus, 4 students we’re picked up at the Cheesequake rest stop and 2 students met the group at the airport. There was some traffic getting to the airport, but everyone made it on time to check-in and get to our flight! Our flight was supposed to depart at 8:10 pm, however we did not leave until approximately 8:40, and was about 7 hours long.
Day 2: SAI Orientation, Welcome Lunch, Walking Tour of Poblenou
We landed in Barcelona around 10:15 on May 14th and everyone was so eager to get get off the long plane ride and start our trip. We made it through customs and picked up our bags and then we were greeted by our SAI tour guides Sandrine and Leticia. We loaded the bus and made our way to The Student Hotel. We had an information session with the hotel and an SAI program orientation including an overview of our daily itinerary, given our metro passes, and recommendations of local places to eat, shop, and visit during our free time. Afterwards we had a welcome lunch on the roof of the Student Hotel with beautiful views the city of Barcelona and a traditional Spanish menu including tomato bread, chicken fingers with a special sauce, patatas bravas, and more. After lunch we had a walking tour of Poblenou with our tour guide Juan David, a local artist who was really excited to show us around Barcelona. We saw many local sites such as the Glòries building, L’Auditori, a local flea market, and a nearby park that had some cool statues. He also took us to an art studio that we were able to go into to checkout the space where some local artists create their work. At the end of the tour we took the bus back to the Student Hotel. After the tour, students had free time to get some dinner and explore Barcelona a little bit more.
